As every new year starts, the Sundance Film Festival arrives. As the first snow in the winter, the popular film festival serves as a thermometer of the beginning of the year in the matter of some of the most interesting independent movies that are going to see the light in the upcoming months. It is time to hear about a collection of titles to add to our list of films to watch this year. And not only dramas, the classic independent genre style, titles like sour comedy The Last Shift (2020), Toni Collette-style Dream Horse (2020), Viggo Mortensen written, directed and starred Falling (2020), Tesla (2020) biopic with Ethan Hawke as Nikola Tesla and Kyle MacLachlan as Thomas Edison, and Downhill (2020), the unnecessary American remake for Ruben Östlund’s delicious Force Majeure (2014).
As happened in the previous years, Sundance 2020 will see the premiere of several titles in the genres of science-fiction, mystery and horror to crave to see throughout the year. Some of the titles in the list can be The Last Thing He Wanted (2020), which will also be part of the Netflix catalog in the upcoming months, psychological horror-thriller Relic (2020), Indonesian demonic horror Impetigore (2019), serial killer crime film Lost Girls (2020), Brandon Cronenberg‘s cyberpunk SciFi thriller Possessor (2020), vengeance flick Promising Young Woman (2020), and the supernatural drama Horse Girl (2020).
Horse Girl (2020) is a fantasy drama-thriller about a socially awkward woman with a fondness for arts and crafts, horses, and supernatural crime shows find her increasingly lucid dreams trickling into her waking life. In the movie, Sarah has a quiet and fairly simple life, contenting herself with the crafts-store job she holds, the nightly supernatural crime TV show she adores, and the equestrian center she visits constantly. When a gift impulsively stirs her curiosity about her family history, unexpected and strange dreams begin to disturb her. As these visions seep into her waking moments, Sarah struggles to hold on to her fragile reality.
Horse Girl (2020) has been written by the star of the film, Alison Brie, together with the director Jeff Baena, which is already well known at the Sundance Festival after being nominated for the Grand Jury Prize with his previous films Joshy (2016) and Life After Beth (2014). Robin Tunney (The Craft (1996)), John Ortiz (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)), Matthew Gray Gubler (Suburban Gothic (2014)), Paul Reiser (Aliens (1986)), Debby Ryan, Dylan Gelula, Molly Shannon, Meredith Hagner, Toby Huss and Jay Duplass also star.
Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass are producers of Horse Girl (2020) via their banner Duplass Brothers Productions. The movie will have its world premiere on Sundance Film Festival on Monday the 27th of January, and soon later will be part of the Netflix catalog on the 7th of February.
