"A Ghost Story", with Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, is the box office surprise of the weekend

With theaters flooded with blockbusters, gigantic monsters, superheroes and all sorts of CGI festivals, it’s hard to believe that there is still space for a small independent horror or fantasy flick. But this weekend we have been proved wrong with the unexpected success of A Ghost Story (2017). The movie is a tender love story bathed with supernatural facts. It tells the story of a young musician who tragically dies but his spirit doesn’t want to give up. So with a white sheet on, he decides to go back to the home he shared with his wife and stay with her.

This movie shared the opening weekend with one of the most expected titles of the season for the big masses, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). And while the Marvel film crashed the box office making over 117 million dollars, A Ghost Story (2017) achieved a bigger audience percentage in the very fewer theaters where it was screened.

The movie is written and directed by David Lowery and has his frequent collaborators Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara as the main stars. After its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and the theatrical release in the USA this past weekend, the movie is still not having a big distribution success, expected to only be seen in a few theaters in Australia (27th of July) and UK (11th of August). But let’s hope after the great numbers and reviews achieving, it can enjoy a better international release.
