One of the most acclaimed horror films of the last season, Huesera: The Bone Woman (2022), or simply Huesera, is coming out on digital this weekend. The movie centers on a young woman who has long dreamed about becoming a mother. After learning that she’s pregnant, she expects to feel happy, yet something’s off.
Valeria’s expected child becomes cursed by a sinister entity. Plunged into a terrifying and dangerous world, a group of witches emerges as her only hope for safety and salvation, but not without grave risk.
This is the debut feature film of the writer and director Michelle Garza Cervera, who got some popularity in the underground festivals circuit thanks to her mystery short film La Rabia de Clara (2016) and has participated in the horror anthology Mexico Barbaro 2 (2018) with her segment “Vitriol”. Abia Castillo was the co-writer of the screenplay.
The main cast in Huesera: The Bone Woman (2022) is formed by Mayra Batalla, Alfonso Dosal, Natalia Solián, Martha Claudia Moreno, Sonia Couoh, Samantha Castillo, Mercedes Hernández, and Aida López.
The movie has achieved a handful of awards including the Blood Window Award for Best Feature Film and Citizen Kane Award for Best Directorial Revelation at the Sitges Film Festival, Best New Narrative Director and Nora Ephron Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival, and the Prize of the City of Torino at the Torino Film Festival. It has also taken part in Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival in Switzerland, Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea, Fantasy Filmfest in Germany, Edinburgh International Film Festival in the UK, MOTELX – Lisbon International Horror Film Festival in Portugal, Fantastic Fest in the USA, Jakarta Film Week in Indonesia, Fantasmagoría – Festival de Cine Fantástico y de Terror de Medellín in Colombia, Imagine Fantastic Film Festival in the Netherlands, Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina, and Gérardmer International Fantastic Film Festival in France among others.
After a limited theatrical release in the USA on February 10, 2023, the movie is scheduled for a release in Mexico on February 22, 2023. It is also coming out as part of the Shudder catalog on February 16, 2023.
