Veronica Ngo, also known Ngo Thanh Van, is becoming one of the most notorious female faces in Vietnam action movies. She has been kicking ass in productions like Clash (2009), House in the Alley (2012), Once Upon a Time in Vietnam (2013), Bitcoin Heist (2016), and Crouching Tiger, and Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (2016), and even stepped in the Holywood industry with Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017), Bright (2017), Da 5 Bloods (2020), The Old Guard (2020), and The Princess (2022). One of her more notorious and recent movies was Le-Van Kiet’s Furie (2019), about an ex-gangster who is lying low in the countryside after becoming a mother but she can’t escape her violent past when her daughter is kidnapped, where she played the main role.
Furies (2023) serves as a prequel for Furie (2019). In it, Bi is a Vietnamese country girl who survives a brutal childhood and escapes to the city of Saigon. Bi is recruited by the mysterious Mrs. Lin, and followed Lin to an apartment where she lives with two new friends: the fierce Thanh and the playful Hong. Lin trains them to take down a Saigon crime lord, Hai, who traffics drugs and young women. Lin coaches Bi in the arts of killing and sensuality. She then willingly applies the skills she has learned to pursue Lin’s dangerous mission.
Veronica Ngo is the main protagonist in Furies (2023), but she is also the director and co-writer together with the saga’s writer Nguyen Truong Nhan and Nha Uyen Ly Nguyen. This is her third feature film in front and behind the cameras after The Lost Dragon (2015) and Tam Cam: The Untold Story (2016).
Song Luan, Dong Anh Quynh, Thuan Nguyen, Toc Tien, Rima Thanh Vy, and Thanh Nhien Phan complete the main cast.
Furies (2023) is having its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 12, 2023. After that, it is scheduled to become part of the Netflix catalog on March 23, 2023.
