Out today, "Meg 2: The Trench" reunites Jason Statham with his aquatic nemesis

Yeah, many said The Meg (2018) was more of the same, just another unoriginal monster shark movie to add to the list that populates the bunch of horror releases every year. It is true that perhaps it wasn’t the most original story out there but The Meg (2018) was a real fun to watch and Jason Statham was a great action hero for a movie like that. So knowing that this weekend The Meg 2: The Trench (2023) is opening is nothing but great news. I already have a plan for the weekend.

In The Meg 2: The Trench (2023), alongside Jason Statham, the Chinese action star Jing Wu, the protagonist of Wolf Warrior (2015), and The Wandering Earth (2019), lead a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse-pounding race against time.

Ben Wheatley, responsible for Down Terrace (2009), Kill List (2011), Sightseers (2012), Free Fire (2016), High-Rise (2015), and In the Earth (2021), is taking over the direction duties from Jon Turteltaub, responsible of the first film. Dean Georgaris, Jon Hoeber, and Erich Hoeber, the team who wrote The Meg (2018) return with the screenplay of the sequel.

Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy also return to the roles they played in the first movie in a cast that also includes Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Melissanthi Mahut, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Whoopie Van Raam.

Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing The Meg 2: The Trench (2023), out in theaters worldwide this weekend. Watch here the final trailer for the film, release only 2 days ago.
