Sometimes, the more simple the idea is, the better. Especially in a genre like science-fiction, that everything is based on the notion. And Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2021), entitled Droste no hate de bokura in the original Japanese language, fits perfectly with that concept.

The setup for the movie is very basic, and all happens mostly in one location. The owner of a little coffee shop finds out a TV in his home is connected to the TV in the shop, only that there is a 2 minutes delay being the one at the shop further in time. That means he can interact with himself and tell things that are yet to happen. Easy and almost childish, until the bubble gets bigger. Because his friends and employees find out about the little time displacement and everybody will want to use it for their own profits.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2021) is absolutely fresh and endearing. It’s good-hearted and has no malice, its only goal is to entertain for a little bit more than one hour. It is the first film project from the popular Europe Kikaku theatre group, and most of the cast and crew were having their first experience in front and behind the cameras. Shot with an iPhone and pretending to be one long uncut shot, the magic of getting together a group of harmless characters, performed by a driven set of actors, with a very inspired idea, and with a gifted crew makes this film one of the indisputable must-see jewels of the year.

It is a pity this year the Fantasia Film Festival is mostly online because the stimulation of a genre film festival here would have been the perfect environment. During most of the watching, I was feeling the same excitement I had a few years ago while watching One Cut of the Dead (2017) [read our review here] at the Sitges Film Festival. But even in the loneliness of my room, watching the movie on my laptop, it was a blast of a trip.

In fact, some people have named Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2021) to be One Cut of the Dead (2017) meets Tenet (2020), and I can see, why it is a good way to introduce it. But Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes (2021) has a strong personality of its own, it is unique and comparisons might make no justice. The real fact is that this movie is a very funny, very original, and very fresh film with lots of love for science-fiction and an implacable determination.
