Sundance Film Festival is always the first big film festival of the year, and most of the time it serves as a thermometer to try to predict how hot will be the year in terms of films. This year started promising, with Sundance holding the premieres of titles like The Last Thing He Wanted (2020), Indonesian demonic horror Impetigore (2019), serial killer crime film Lost Girls (2020), Brandon Cronenberg‘s cyberpunk SciFi thriller Possessor (2020), vengeance flick Promising Young Woman (2020), and the supernatural drama Horse Girl (2020). But what we couldn’t expect is how the whole culture world would get damaged by this COVID-19 pandemic, so most of the titles won’t have the desired theatrical presence and will be confined into a domestic Video on Demand release.
Another one of the movies that premiered at Sundance and now it has it’s scheduled VoD release is supernatural horror Relic (2020). It centers on a daughter, mother, and grandmother who are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family’s home.
Relic (2020) is the debut film as a director of Natalie Erika James, an awards-winner thanks to her horror short film Creswick (2017). She has also been co-writer of the screenplay together with frequent collaborator Christian White. The movie has been produced by Jake Gyllenhaal via his banner Nine Stories Productions, and the Russo Brothers via AGBO.
The main cast for Relic (2020) is formed by Emily Mortimer (Transsiberian (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Mary (2019)), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows (2012), Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016), The Neon Demon (2016)), and veteran Robyn Nevin (The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Gods of Egypt (2016)). Together with them, Chris Bunton, Steve Rodgers, Jeremy Stanford, and Catherine Glavicic also star.
Relic (2020) will be available on Video on Demand platforms on July 10, 2020. Here you can find the official trailer for the movie:
